I’ve been on a mission recently to find natural products that actually work and are made in Canada (or even better, Toronto). It’s easy to walk into stores like Sephora and walk out with products that are pretty much guaranteed to do the job, but what’s not easy is sourcing local, natural products that not only work, but are better than their chemically-laden counterparts.
I discovered The Parkdale Butter Co. at this year’s Green Living Show and was immediately drawn to their booth by the great design and their Toronto neighbourhood name. I stopped in hoping they would have a product for my lips that would relieve me of my love for Vaseline (don’t judge me) and left with a lip butter, face balm and body butter!
The Parkdale Butter Co.’s products are:
- handcrafted in Toronto
- 100% natural, vegan, and fair trade
- made without the use of chemicals, perfumes or preservatives
- never tested on animals
- made in a gluten free facility
So, what I did I think of the products?
Espresso Face Balm
Ingredients: Soy Butter (non-GMO), Green Coffee Bean Essential Oil (cold-pressed), Love
I never expected to love this product. I have a pretty solid love for my Miracle 10 products (which are also made in Canada) and wasn’t in the market for a new face cream. I’m glad I decided to try this! Not only does it smell delicious and invigorating (think of that coffee you drink first thing in the morning), but the antioxidants in the coffee extract are supposed to slow signs of aging and reduce puffiness. The balm is also rich in Vitamin E which helps regenerate skin cells. I’m not sure it’s reversing the aging process yet, but I’m hopeful!
I have been using this exclusively as my new daily eye cream and alternating my evening moisturizing routine between Miracle 10 and the Espresso Face Balm. My skin looks and feels fantastic so it must be working. Not only am I using it, but my husband has started using it too! It’s nice to have one product that we both can use. It’s crazy how many products we have between the two of us in our bathroom cabinet.
Organic Peppermint Lip Butter
Ingredients: Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Shea Butter, Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Peppermint Essential Oil, Love
I wanted to love this lip butter so badly. I love the ingredients, smell, and adorable tin that it comes in; unfortunately, I noticed after several days my lips became very dry and started cracking. I keep trying it off and on, but it’s just not the product for me. I think the peppermint is just too drying for me.
It’s ok that I don’t love the lip butter, because of their…
CocoaNut Body Butter
Ingredients: Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Shea Butter, Love
I don’t mean to sound like a broken record, but this CocoaNut Body Butter smells glorious! I have been using it all over my body and my skin is soft and moisturized. I was a little worried when I first started using it because it feels a little oily when I first apply it, but my skin absorbs it very quickly and no oily residue is left behind. The issue could have more to do with my being used to fast-absorbing moisturizers and not being used to natural butters. After giving the body butter a minute to absorb the only thing left behind is soft and silky skin.
The other benefit to this body butter is that the Shea butter offers a low level of UV protection (approximately SPF-6). I had no idea that there is UV protection in Shea butter! It’s nice to know that my skin always has a small amount of protection, especially for those days when I end up spending more time than expected in the sun.
I’ve also started using the CocoaNut Body Butter on my lips and it has replaced my love of Vaseline. The body butter does everything for my lips that Vaseline does (softens, soothes and repairs), except it’s all natural, ethically sourced and is better for my body, inside and out.
The Parkdale Butter Co. has done an amazing job creating beautiful products that actually work! I have enjoyed the products I’ve used so much that I now want to try a few more of their products.
Right now products from The Parkdale Butter Co. are for sale online and various retailers (see locations here).
As of May 31, 2015, they will be opening up their own booth within the Toronto Designers Market at 1605 Queen St. W. The Toronto Designers Market is a new project that will provide clean, affordable space for young designers and entrepreneurs to sell their products to the public without having to spend thousands of dollars on their own storefront. Based on the quality of The Parkdale Butter Co., I can’t wait to find out what other amazing companies will be joining the Toronto Designers Market!
