Lately, I’ve been on a quest for more natural products, and when a friend told me she was going to try a deodorant made from Leaves of Trees, I decided deodorant seemed like a good product to start with. I was also interested in starting with deodorant as I often develop a reaction to it, which I think is pretty common.
I’m sure by now everyone has heard about the studies that link aluminum, a main ingredient in antiperspirants, to breast cancer and Alzheimers. A quick internet search shows that those results are contradicted by an equal number of other studies and articles! I am actually more confused about the topic than I was before, but at the end of the day, less chemicals has to be better for my body than more chemicals.
The two natural deodorants I chose for comparison are from Leaves of Trees and Lovefresh, both Toronto-based companies. I have only tried a natural deodorant once before without much success. I have also only used antiperspirants and never just a deodorant. I was terrified that I would end up with enormous wet and unpleasantly smelling stains on my clothes!
In order to really try out both products, I quit using my regular Dove antiperspirant and used these new products exclusively for a month, alternating days, weeks, and for the final week used Lovefresh under my left arm and Leaves of Trees under my right. I take product testing seriously!
There were a few things I noticed immediately about both of them in comparison to the antiperspirants that I regularly use. I’m not use to feeling any kind of dampness under my arms and was very aware of it throughout my day. I also noticed that I had to wash my tops and dresses more frequently than I usually do (I generally wear my clothes several times before washing them so they last longer).
Leaves of Trees (Eucalyptus Mint)
Ingredients: Kaolin (Clay), Sodium Bicarbonate, Argania Spinosa (Argan) Nut Oil, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Cetearyl Alcohol, Sodium Cetearyl Sulfate, Azadirachta Indica (Neem) Oil, Eucalyptus Globulus (Eucalyptus) Oil, Mentha Arvensis (Peppermint) Oil, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Seed Extract And Glycerin, Tocopherol (Vitamin E)
I was very excited to try Leaves of Trees deodorant. I had already heard some great things about it and the scent and packaging had already won me over. The consistency and packaging is similar to toothpaste, you only squeeze out exactly what you need and apply it easily using your fingers. Be careful when wearing dark clothes, like most deodorants/antiperspirants, it can easily leave white marks behind, especially when it’s not quite dry.
The texture was moisturizing and my sensitive skin didn’t have any reaction to it. I was disappointed that the lovely scent didn’t last very long, by noon it was already gone. I also had to reapply at the end of the work day as there was no way it would take me through an entire day, but this is a small downside to using a product with no long-term side effects.
Leaves of Trees can be purchased online, at their shop at 177 Queen St. E., Toronto, or through various other retailers listed here. I purchased mine through a beautiful new eco-online shop called Petal & Post.
Lovefresh (Lavender Tea Tree)
Ingredients: Fair Trade Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Kaolin Clay, Sodium Bicarbonate (aluminum-free), Emulsifying Wax (coconut derived) and natural organic essential oils*. That’s it.
I had noticed Lovefresh at Chapters/Indigo for quite awhile and was confused that a bookstore sells deodorant! My yoga studio also carries this brand and the staff have been talking it up to me for quite some time, and I have to admit, it didn’t fail to deliver.
There’s a trick to applying Lovefresh (which I learned after several failed attempts). Take a pea-sized amount and place it under your arms and allow it to soften with your body head. Once it’s softened, use your fingers to spread it around.
Lovefresh doesn’t leave marks on your clothes and even made it through an entire workday and an after work run with only a slight bit of odour at the end. The texture was moisturizing and my sensitive skin didn’t have any reaction to it.
One of the only things I don’t like about Lovefresh is scooping the product out using my fingers. I really hate getting stuff under my nails and it’s inevitable with this packaging. I really wish it came with a small applicator so I could more efficiently scoop out the desired amount.
Update: Shortly after posting I learned that Lovefresh deodorant is now available in a stick format – I can’t wait to try it!
Lovefresh can be purchased through their online shop and various other retailers.
As with all products, it comes down to personal preference, and with personal care products, it’s also about body chemistry. For me, Lovefresh delivered all day, every day.
Is it strange to say that I wanted to love Leaves of Trees more? I love how exclusive and special the product feels, and also the tube that makes application easy. But I knew I was in trouble when my husband gave me a hug and pointed out my less-than-fresh smell.
I would be interested in knowing if you have tried out either or both of these products and what you thought! Leave a comment or send me an email.
